Playa del Carmen: Seeking recommendations

Comments

Wow - what a travel year (fingers crossed it all pans out). We went to Playa Del Carmen last May. I recommend Coba for the ruins - big, almost like Chichen Itza and you can climb them (someone died at Chichen Itza and now you can't climb them there). We went on a tour that combined cave swimming with
Coba and a cavern tour (separate cavern). The overall experience was great, though I am not a fan of group tours and the folks we were with underscored all of the reasons why. Plus, the last place we went had a monkey chained by the neck. Different way of life.

Absolutely do NOT stay at Wyndham Maya. Sucked. Colossally.

Absolutely DO eat at Yachi's (I know I'm spelling it wrong - there is a z in there somewhere). Best meal we had the entire time we were there. It's Mayan cuisine and is amazing.

Have a great time!
Yeah wow, lots of travel ideas, sounds great!
Have fun you two!
OOoooh! LUCKY! That is absolutely one of my FAV spots in the WORLD! I lub it! I liked the Xcaret. The pyramids are OK. Once you've seen one, you've kinda seen them all. :P I remember it was hella frickin' hot because it's out in the middle of no where.

You could stay in Playa all week w/o getting bored. There's lotsa shops and tons of places to eat. The water was the most beautiful water I've ever seen. Take the ferry to Cozumel and hang out there for a day or two and rent scooters and ride around the island. So much fun!!!

I envy you. I want to go back!

Bring sandal type shoes - Tevas (http://z.about.com/d/shoes/1/0/M/L/teva_sandals.jpg) so you can dip your feet in the water at all times! :)
Exciting plans! I'm jealous. I'm not going to have much vacation time for at least a few months.

I've never been to Playa de Carmen, but look at TravelAdvisor.com if you haven't already. There are reviews for most hotels and restaurants, and there are forums where you can ask questions.
Cool, thanks for the tips!
Thanks for the recs -- I will definitely try to find Yachi's. I'm dying to try some Mayan food.
Are you taking any vaca between jobs?
No, they pretty much want me there ASAP. I have two weeks between last day at my old job and first day at my new job. That first week is going to be getting my stuff moved and tying up loose ends. The second week is going to be me physically driving up there and getting oriented in the city, they are putting me up in a really awesome furnished temp housing right next to Pike Place Market though. I will also get to visit friends in Portland on my way to Seattle so I am actually looking forward to the drive.

Are you and Lu coming to my going away party? I'm thinking of raffling off some Marget Cho tickets and Zoo/Wild Animal Park tickets at the party.
Wow, you've got your hands full! Yeah, we'll be at the party.
